Google Nexus 5 Review

The nexus series has been the most awaited series of android phones and nexus 5 is no exception to that. The nexus 5 is the most value for money high spec'd mobile that you can buy right now. Everything  is just right with it. Even small design elements in the nexus 5 make a great impact, like the round ear speaker grille, loudspeakers at the bottom instead of the back, sleek and slim profile etc.

At the bottom you would see two meshes on the either side of the usb port, one might mistake them for stereo speakers but in reality only one is the speaker and the other is for the microphone. A front facing speaker like the htc one would be great but the current one is better than a speaker at the back.

Its been almost two decades and the ear speaker grille design has been the same like a slit, but is our ear's opening like a slit? Well no, its more round like the round earpiece of the nexus 5.

Playing games is a breeze, even the loading times are a bit less than the nexus 4 even though both their specifications are quite similar the only difference being the faster central processing unit and the ddr3 RAM. Graphics quality is much better than a iPhone 5 or a lumia 920

Camera quality is good but not the best, this shooter excels at  macro shots. The new feature in this nexus is the introduction of the Optical Image Stabilization of the camera assembly. This greatly improves the video capture by stabilizing the video and also helps during photography by compensating for hand shaking to some extent. But the new camera interface is very difficult in getting used to.

User Interface
Android kitKat  on the nexus 5 brings with a host of improvements and features in the nexus 5. One noticeable improvement is in the speech recognition department. Earlier only windows phone could recognize the indian accent easily but now with improvements in the google speech engine it is even better than the windows phone's speech service. All commands, indian street names and people's name it can recognize very easily. On a side note, Siri is nowhere near to recognizing indian accent.
You don’t need to touch the screen to get things done. When on your home screen or in Google Now, just say “Ok Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song.

The nexus 5 comes preloaded with quick office integrated with google drive.

'Google now' is something that is winning hearts all over the nexus community. Simply saying, it gives just the right information at just the right time. A very unique concept that is bringing information right to our finger tips automatically.

I never liked the scrolling on the nexus series, to me it doesn't feel real ,more like accelerated ,iOS and windows phone are more natural in this department.

Its battery life is now better than the previous nexus 4, but the difference is marginal. Battery life is just about adequate and will take you through the day, this largely depends on your usage. With heavy continuous usage it might not last you even 6 hours or with moderate use can last upto 11 hours. If you want an extreme battery life, look for the lenovo p780

This time the nexus is delivered with a headphone in the box, unlike the nexus 4 which had none. FM radio support is still lacking though.

Good screen sharpness.
Thin and light
Great performance
Value for money
More reliable than other phones
Best android experience - first to receive updates.

These are just petty issues nothing too big to not consider buying this phone
Camera controls are difficult to use
Average camera performance, nothing exceptional
No FM radio
White earpiece grill on the white nexus 5 looks awkward.
Speaker volume less than the Lumia series
In nexus 5 on typing the complete lock code, one needs to tap enter to unlock, whereas with others like windows and iOS , the phone gets unlocked with the tap of the last number of the code.

Nexus 5 is the best android phone to have at this price point, if you are an android fanboy then don't look at any other brand be it Samsung, micromax, htc etc. Just go for the nexus 5 with your eyes closed. Starting at Rs. 29k for the 16GB and 33k for the 32GB version, this is our recommended choice for a phone and scores over the iPhone 5s which is highly overpriced.

Rating: 4.75 stars out of 5
