Pothole detection and warning system

We have devised a first in the world functionality for detecting potholes on the road, collecting the data and displaying it on a map.

Roads in India are said to be the worst in the world. With potholes at every meter of the road, they rattle every internal organ of the innocent traveller. With the civic agencies turning a blind eye, the people need to take the initiative themselves. So being a responsible citizen of this country we thought to tackle this problem by making a device attached to a car that can sense the potholes on the road, locate them using GPS and send their location to government civic agencies using gsm(So that they can come and repair those roads), also thereby  making a national database about road quality by which we will be able to make the information available to all common people on  their gps navigation devices like "MapMyIndia navigator". By using this information people can avoid bad bumpy roads and take the alternate route so as to protect their cars fro bumps and undercarriage damage

Prototype device is ready that can detect potholes, transfer the potholes' location (gathered from GPS) to a Computer and can also automatically send an SMS to the Public Works Department about the pothole. It can be attached to a car and can detect potholes even if the car is travelling at high speed.

Working Methodology
Suppose a person is driving his car with our device installed, now whenever his car goes over a pothole the pothole sensor in our device will sense the pothole and will relay the information to the microcontroller which in turn will take the GPS location co-ordinates at that same instant and send this information to the GSM module which will send an SMS to the concerned government authorities.This process is repeated with each pothole encountered on the way. As the number of cars with this device increases the information received will eventually cover all the roads in India and with this a national database of road quality can be maintained. Now with a national map of road quality being made with our device, so any driver can see this road quality map on the display screens in their cars. He canthen avoid bad or bumpy roads to take the alternate route and save himself and his car from these deadly potholes. This system also takes care of alerting the government authorities about a pothole or bad road on its own. Every time a commuter passes over a pothole the government will be alerted until and unless they come and repair that road.

The best part is this system can be integrated with existing car GPS navigation devices in the market at an added cost of around only $10 to the cost of the navigation device. So the GPS navigation companies can give this technology as an added feature in their devices and will have a competitive edge in the market with this feature. Also integration with smartphones is easily possible.
